Vakya

Sanskrit, one sentence at a time

The shape of a sentence

A Sanskrit sentence puts the verb at the end, and the word on the receiving end changes its ending to say so. Build a few and it becomes obvious.

Beta content. These sentences are built from a small, deliberately narrow set of rules: third person, singular, present tense, and four noun endings only. It is still being checked by a Sanskrit reader. If you spot a mistake, please tell us through tsblack.in and it will be corrected.

What changes, and why

बालः is the boy when he is doing something. बालम् is the boy when something is being done to him. The same word, a different ending, and Sanskrit uses that instead of relying on word order.

बालः गजम् पश्यति
balah gajam pasyati - the boy sees the elephant.
